A short trip works best when the flight, hotel and main experience fit the time you actually have. Start with your arrival and departure windows, then decide what you want the weekend to revolve around: a concert, a game, food, beach time or simply a comfortable change of scenery.
Choose the anchor before choosing the hotel
For an event weekend, confirm the exact venue and event date first. For a food or sightseeing trip, choose the neighborhood where you expect to spend most of your time. A hotel that is cheaper but far from those plans may add transport costs and cut into the hours you came to enjoy.

Count usable hours, not just nights
Write down when you can realistically reach the hotel after landing, collecting bags and traveling from the airport. On departure day, work backward from your airline's check-in deadlines and transfer pickup. A two-night stay with a late arrival and early departure can leave only one full day.
For a time-sensitive event, compare arriving the day before with arriving on the day. The earlier arrival costs another night but creates more room to handle delays. Check the event's admission rules and confirm any accessible transportation needs before committing.
Compare a complete budget
Put airfare, baggage, seats, room taxes, required hotel fees, airport transfers, local transport, event tickets and meals into one total. For example, in a hypothetical comparison, a $60 room saving paired with $90 in extra transport raises the total by $30. Those figures illustrate the method; they are not current rates.
Decide whether a rental car earns its place
List the journeys you actually need. Compare a rental's full price plus fuel and parking with the total for transfers and local rides. Check pickup hours, driver requirements and one-way return terms directly with the provider. A resort stay and a multi-stop road trip can have very different transportation needs.
Keep the plan flexible where it matters
Compare the cancellation deadline and change terms for each booking separately. A refundable hotel does not make a flight or event ticket refundable. Keep the provider's confirmation and support details together so you know who handles each part of the trip.
