Updated August 26, 2026 · Practical planning guide
New York travelers often compare JFK, LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR) on airfare alone. The better airport can change once you include the Manhattan neighborhood, arrival time, baggage and ground transportation.
Start with the exact Manhattan neighborhood
Midtown, Lower Manhattan, Upper Manhattan and other neighborhoods can favor different transit patterns. Use the hotel or destination address, not the word “Manhattan,” as the endpoint.
Rail and subway options vary by airport
JFK and EWR use airport rail connections that feed into regional rail or subway networks, while LaGuardia relies more heavily on bus connections before rail. Check current airport and transit-agency guidance because service patterns and construction can change.
Door-to-door transportation can win with a group
Taxi, rideshare or a prearranged transfer may be more practical when several travelers split the cost, luggage is heavy or the arrival is late. Compare the complete quoted or metered trip rather than assuming public transit is always cheapest.
Do not treat EWR as “another New York airport” without the New Jersey leg
Newark Liberty is in New Jersey. That does not make it a bad choice, but the state line, ground route and hotel location should be part of the comparison.
Recheck the departure airport carefully
New York trips are especially vulnerable to airport-code mistakes. Confirm JFK, LGA or EWR on every booking, transfer and return-day plan before leaving the hotel.
Before you book
- Save the Manhattan destination address.
- Compare the flight and ground trip together.
- Confirm the exact airport code before purchase.
- Check current transit service before travel.
- Leave extra time for traffic or service disruptions on departure day.
