Sangster International Airport (MBJ) and Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) serve different parts of Jamaica. The right choice is usually the one that fits your final destination and ground transportation—not the one with the lowest airfare in isolation.
Which airport fits your hotel area?
| Where you are staying | Airport to examine first | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Montego Bay | MBJ — Sangster | The hotel's pickup arrangement and exact meeting point |
| Negril | MBJ — Sangster | Door-to-door transfer quote for your exact hotel |
| Kingston | KIN — Norman Manley | The drive to your hotel or business address |
| Ocho Rios area | Compare the full itinerary | Check MBJ and KIN transfers, and whether a suitable flight to Ian Fleming International is available |
The Jamaica Tourist Board identifies MBJ as a useful gateway for Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, and KIN for Kingston. It also identifies Ian Fleming International near Ocho Rios. This table is a planning starting point, not a promise that one airport is best for every flight date. See the official Jamaica airport overview.
Get a transfer quote that answers the real question
Send the transfer provider your arrival airport, flight number, landing time, hotel address, group size and luggage needs. Ask whether the quote covers the entire vehicle or each traveler, whether other hotel stops are included, and what happens if the flight is delayed. Request an estimated drive time for that address and pickup window; a generic airport-to-town estimate is not a hotel arrival guarantee.
When the cheaper flight costs more
Compare the round-trip total for everyone traveling. In a hypothetical example, saving $80 per person on two flights saves $160. If that airport adds $200 in transfers, the cheaper airfare makes the complete trip $40 more expensive, before counting the extra time. Use actual quotes in the trip budget calculator and compare both return journeys.
A premium arrival still needs the right airport
A lounge or arrival service can improve comfort, but it does not shorten the road between the airport and your resort. Confirm what the service includes, where your driver meets you and whether the vehicle accommodates your bags. Keep the airport choice, hotel and ground transfer connected before adding optional extras.
MBJ: Montego Bay
MBJ is Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. It is commonly relevant to travelers whose Jamaica plans center on Montego Bay and resort areas on the north or west side of the island.
KIN: Kingston
KIN is Norman Manley International Airport serving Kingston. It is a different arrival point and may fit better when your plans center on Kingston or nearby destinations.
Ground transportation can erase a fare difference
A cheaper ticket can lose its advantage if it leaves you with a long transfer across the island. Compare the airport-to-stay portion before purchasing the flight.
Arrival time matters
Late-night arrivals, transfer availability, hotel check-in and local transportation plans can change which itinerary is more practical. Confirm those details before checkout.
Before you book
- Choose the airport after confirming the final destination.
- Compare transfer options before buying the ticket.
- Check entry requirements with official government sources.
- Confirm airline fare rules and final total at checkout.
Questions to answer before choosing MBJ or KIN
- What exact town, resort or address are you traveling to after landing?
- What transfer options are available at the time your flight arrives?
- What is the total trip cost after airfare, baggage and ground transportation are combined?
- Does the return-flight schedule leave enough time for the trip back to the airport?
