Packing for a cruise can seem like a daunting task. And if that cruise happens to be to one of the most remote parts of the planet, you’d be forgiven for wondering what on earth you’ll need to throw in your suitcase.

A cruise to the Antarctic is becoming something many travellers have set their sights on as a dream trip, but there is one simple packing mistake many who do get there make.
Dr John Kirkwood, Expedition Leader for Aurora Expedition cruises, said that often people get too caught up in how cold it’s going to be and don’t bring the correct clothing.
“While the Antarctic Peninsula is warming, it is still one of the coldest places on the planet, and East Antarctica can get seriously cold,” he told nine.com.au.
“It is very hard to dress too warmly when sitting in a Zodiac, but you can easily overheat on a walk, so flexibility is key. Layers are essential.”
John has enjoyed a career spanning more than 30 years in polar and marine research.
He is a marine biologist by training as well as a highly respected lecturer, academic and mentor at Queensland’s Griffith University.
His advice can apply to any kind of expedition cruise in the colder regions, including Alaska, Scandinavia, and the Arctic Circle.

And knowing what to wear can really make or break your experience.
“Do not underestimate the importance of mid-layers,” he said, adding that two comfortable warm layers are usually enough.
“A day pack is useful so you can remove and store layers if you get too warm.”

He would also recommend packing a puffer jacket – something you can quickly throw on when you rush out on deck to see a passing whale.
For your base layer he recommends merino thermals as they are “breathable, warm and comfortable” enough for all-day wear.
Then your outer layer needs to protect you from wind, rain, and sea spray.
“Aurora Expeditions provides an excellent expedition jacket, but you will need to bring your own waterproof overpants,” he said.
