BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Drivers should prepare for significant travel delays south of the metro next weekend as a stretch of Interstate 35W shuts down in both directions for bridge demolition and road work.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, May 1, I-35W will be fully closed between Interstate 494 and the I-35/I-35E/I-35W split. The highway is expected to remain closed until the morning commute at 5 a.m. Monday, May 4.
During the closure, crews will demolish the eastbound Highway 13 bridge, perform patching on northbound I-35W, and prepare the interstate for upcoming traffic shifts.
All ramps along I-35W between I-494 and the “split” will be closed to traffic during the work window. To get around the closure, transportation officials recommend the following detours:
Project officials are urging drivers to check 511 for real-time updates and to allow for extra travel time to reach their destinations.
While the work is scheduled to conclude before the Monday morning rush hour, all construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule-permitting and remain subject to change.
