Air travel can already be stressful and exhausting before you even factor in the process of getting from one connecting flight to the next.

It always feels like you’re either rushing against the clock to make it in time, or you’re loitering in limbo in an airport for what feels like eternity.
Though both options aren’t ideal, there’s not much worse than missing your connecting flight and being stranded in a random country – especially when it’s not your fault.
Thankfully, there are a handful of things you can do to decrease the chances of that ever happening to you again.
According to an expert, one of the best things you can do to ensure you make your connection starts before you’ve even booked your flight.
A US-based flight attendant told Travel + Leisure that you should always book your first leg on a morning flight wherever possible, as they’re less likely to be delayed and impact your arrival in your connection airport.
“Later missed flights mean you also run the risk of having to stay overnight, and not all airlines will reimburse for hotel and food,” he added.
“They may also hold onto your luggage, and you won’t have access to it. It’s a headache to have to buy new clothes and toiletries and submit receipts.”
Yes, the thought of getting to the airport at the crack of dawn isn’t exactly appealing. But it’s better than having to spend the night sleeping on a cold terminal floor waiting for a replacement connection.

If you do miss your connecting flight, just remember that there’s not much you can really do to change your situation. Get help from the airline and accept your fate, rather than getting mad.
“We are often on the receiving end of anger and anxiety due to travel woes, and there is not much we can do,” the flight attendant said.
He also suggested that if you’re able to select your seat on board the first leg, try to pick a row near the front of the cabin, which means you’ll be quicker in getting off.
Not checking luggage is also another pro tip – if you can manage to bring everything in a carry-on-sized bag, you won’t have to waste time waiting for your bags or not having them make it onto your next flight.
