WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – A First Alert Weather Day has been issued for Sunday into Sunday evening for snow, a wintry mix, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions at times. The latest winter storm will arrive on Sunday morning with snow showers and light mixed precipitation. With temperatures running close to or a few degrees above freezing, there will be a rain/snow line setting up Sunday morning in the southern parts of the area, slowly shifting to the northeast from midday into the afternoon. Indications are that snow will fall throughout Sunday in the Northwoods, while snow could mix with sleet or rain from Highway 29 to Highway 10, while snow mixes with and changes to rain from around Wisconsin Rapids on south. The snow in the Northwoods will taper to snow showers Sunday evening, while any precipitation in Central Wisconsin will fall as snow showers, tapering off before midnight Sunday night. Gusty winds up to 35 mph are expected late Sunday afternoon into Sunday night and Monday.
A Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory are in effect for the northern half of the area from Sunday morning to Monday morning.
Sunday is going to be a messy, wintry day in much of northern and central Wisconsin. Low pressure will be tracking into the region, with the first wave of snow showers and a bit of mixed precipitation arriving early Sunday morning. As the morning goes along, periods of snow fall from Highway 10 on north, with the rain/snow line pushing northeast to near Wisconsin Rapids and Plover by late morning. The rain/snow line will continue to shift northeast Sunday afternoon to near Highway 10 and perhaps as close to Highway 29. With this in mind, snow will likely continue to fall in the Northwoods, with snow and some sleet or rain mixing in from Highway 29 to Highway 10, while rain showers will be a better bet farther south Sunday afternoon.
As the low pressure moves to the east, snow showers will affect Central Wisconsin, while snow in the north will taper to snow showers Sunday night. The flakes may continue to fall. Snowfall of 5 to 8 inches is possible from Medford to Antigo on north, including Rhinelander. 3 to 5 inches south of Medford to Wausau, Marshfield, and Stevens Point, while 1 to 3 inches of snowfall in Wisconsin Rapids and Plover. There is going to be a sharp drop off in snowfall on the southern edge of this storm, with a coating to 1″ just south of Wisconsin Rapids and down to northern Juneau, Adams, and Waushara Counties.
Be prepared for slippery to slushy and snow-covered roads on Sunday into Sunday evening. If you must travel, allow plenty of extra time, slow down, and don’t forget to bring along your winter survival kit.
