The Cayman Islands tourism industry is off to a record-breaking start in 2026, with air arrivals reaching unprecedented levels during the first quarter of the year, according to Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism and Trade Development Gary Rutty.
Speaking during Caribbean Week in New York, Rutty said the destination welcomed more than 797,000 air and cruise visitors during the first 120 days of 2026, underscoring continued strong demand for the British Overseas Territory.
A major milestone came in March, when monthly air arrivals exceeded 60,000 for the first time in the destination's history.
Rutty also noted that nearly 45% of visitors are repeat guests, highlighting the Cayman Islands' ability to retain travelers through its tourism offerings and visitor experience.
To support continued growth, the government is investing in expanded air access, new accommodations, long-term planning and digital innovation.
Among the latest developments, Cayman Airways recently launched nonstop service from Austin, creating another gateway for U.S. travelers.
The accommodations sector is also expanding with several major developments. These include the 95-room ONE GT boutique hotel in George Town and the 382-room Hyatt Grand Cayman. Construction also began in February on the Mandarin Oriental Residences Grand Cayman, the luxury brand's first purpose-built Caribbean resort, which is expected to open in 2028.
Officials are also preparing a new national tourism plan aimed at promoting sustainable growth, strengthening workforce development and creating more opportunities for Caymanians to benefit from the industry.
In addition, a national digital transformation task force is developing recommendations focused on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence's impact on the workforce and economic diversification through digital assets.
Rutty also highlighted recent international recognition for Cayman Enterprise City, which was ranked the top knowledge zone in the Americas and second globally by the Financial Times Group.
Looking ahead, the minister said the government's priorities over the next 12 to 24 months will be maintaining strong visitor arrivals, expanding airlift and ensuring Caymanians continue to share in the benefits of the tourism sector's growth.
