Caltrans is exploring the idea of high-speed buses traveling across California freeways to connect major cities such as Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
The proposed buses would travel at speeds between 80 and 140 miles per hour, potentially cutting travel times significantly, including a possible trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just over three hours.
“It would be best to start with interregional service that can connect Los Angeles with San Diego and San Francisco, Bay Area and Sacramento. That would favor I-5, and I-10 is the first freeways. This network may start with stations at interchanges only and local stations added over time. New freeways with interchange stations and new local stations can also be added over time,” Ryan Snyder, with Caltrans, said.
Researchers said major challenges remain, including the need for new infrastructure, safety testing, vehicle redesign, and addressing the political hurdles of repurposing freeway lanes for transit.
