Winter weather disrupts flights at Savannah Hilton Head International Airport – WTOC

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Winter weather continued to disrupt travel Sunday with flights in and out of Savannah Hilton Head International Airport facing delays and cancellations.
Travelers prepared for the worst and hoped for the best as they dealt with disrupted schedules. Sterling and Annette Montierth said they anticipated problems.
“We kind of knew it could happen, this is kind of a weird storm, weird stuff going on,” the couple said.
Airport officials posted to social media telling people to keep an eye on their flight status before heading out. One delayed flight can disrupt an entire travel day.
The Montierths’ flight out of Savannah was repeatedly delayed. They said they were only going to have two minutes to make their connecting flight in Atlanta.
“We would have tried to get out sooner had we been alerted sooner, but we didn’t get the alerts early enough to make any big changes,” Annette Montierth said.
Knowing weather may impact their flights, travelers came prepared for an extra hotel stay.
“We grabbed a bunch of our overnight stuff, stuck it in our backpacks so we don’t have to check that,” Annette Montierth said.
For some passengers, travel disruptions have lasted days. Carla Jeffers had been at the airport for six hours after yesterday’s storm cancelled her family’s flight home.
“Got here at 11 o’clock this morning, and been here ever since waiting for my flight because you know it was cancelled last night. So we are trying this again,” Jeffers said.
As people sat out long waits, they received an impromptu performance. Saloj Abbas jumped at the opportunity of an open piano while waiting for his sister’s flight to land. He played a few songs, receiving applause from passengers.
“Please don’t play the piano unless you can play like Mozart, so I thought I could play like Mozart, no I’m lying,” Abbas said. “There were a couple of people like clapping and stuff it basically shows people want to hear it and they’re just board as well and I think music just brings people together.”
Airport officials recommend travelers keep an eye on flight status during extreme weather and come prepared with extra clothes, snacks and chargers in case of delays or cancellations.
