A winter weather advisory is in effect across much of north-central and central Wisconsin as rapidly falling temperatures are expected to cause a flash freeze, turning wet roads icy and making travel hazardous through early Friday.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay said wet and untreated roads are likely to freeze quickly late Thursday afternoon and evening as colder air moves in, creating areas of black ice. Light snow is also expected, with accumulations generally an inch or less, though northern Vilas County could see up to a few inches.

Forecasters say rapidly falling temperatures will move in from the west, causing wet and untreated roads to freeze quickly. That means icy conditions could develop within a short window — potentially within an hour or two once temperatures drop to freezing.
The advisory covers Marathon, Portage, Waushara, Wood, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas counties, including Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield, Merrill, Rhinelander, Antigo and Eagle River. Winds are expected to gust as high as 30 to 35 mph.
Snow showers are expected to continue overnight, occasionally becoming moderate, before tapering off by Friday morning. The advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.
Additional light snow could again affect travel Friday night into Saturday morning, particularly in northern Wisconsin.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution. Current road conditions are available by calling 511. The National Weather Service also asked spotters and the public to report hazardous travel conditions as they occur.
