Nearly 82 million people are expected to travel for this Thanksgiving holiday. Across planes, trains and automobiles, it’s looking forward to being a busy next few weeks for travel.
AAA projects over 82 million people are going to travel at least 50 miles from home, starting Nov. 25 to Dec. 1. Forecasting 1.6 million more travelers than the year before, setting a new overall record.
Compared to other holidays, like Memorial Day and July 4, Thanksgiving is the single busiest holiday for travel.
“Thanksgiving travel numbers are always impressive because this holiday has become synonymous with heading out of town to spend time with loved ones,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel.
Nearly 90 percent of Thanksgiving travelers will be hitting the road in their cars, with an additional 1.3 million people compared to last year.
Overall, AAA recommends it’s best to hit the road before 11 AM, from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, and experts even recommend heading out on Nov. 25 if your schedule allows. While on Thanksgiving Day, expect light traffic.
The 5 Freeway between Los Angeles and Bakersfield will see the heaviest traffic volume, especially on Wednesday evening.
