The number of flight cancellations and delays are likely to steadily increase at our nation’s busiest airports.
The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered a reduction in air traffic due to the government shutdown.
Forty of what the government calls “high-impact” airports are affected.
Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester airports aren’t included on that list, but it does have flights to and from airports that are. On Friday, the airports saw flights canceled and delayed.
“Ultimately, this is all about safety and making sure the traveling public is safe,” state Transportation Department Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said.
In the wake of the reductions, travel experts advise knowing your logistics.
“Be flexible and be patient, if you can,” said Eric Stigberg, managing director of public affairs for AAA Northway. “Have a plan B. Your flight’s canceled? Can you make another flight? Can you drive instead?”
As far as resources, Stigberg said know what they are before you go to an airport.
“AAA always recommends that when you’re flying, you download your airlines app,” said Stigberg. “That’s going to have a lot of information. Make sure notifications are turned on.”
Travel insurance is also recommended, whether it’s the airline or you that has to cancel your plans.
