United Airlines Suspends Houston to Havana Flights Amid Growing US Travel Restrictions to Cuba, Everything You Need to Know Now – Travel And Tour World

Saturday, July 26, 2025
United Airlines (UA) has announced plans to suspend all service between Houston, Havana and Cuba, from September 2, 2025. Customers trying to book flights for dates after Sept. 1 will find the airline’s website has blocked the dates. The halt will be in effect for the entire winter season of 2025-26 and flights will not resume until at least summer 2026. But United has suggested the service could be reinstated after next summer’s season, depending on market conditions and demand.

Reason for The Suspension

United Airlines said flight schedules are frequently updated to accommodate seasonal shifts, demand and other market conditions. The move to suspend this route comes after U.S. lawmakers, including some Republicans, called for more stringent travel restrictions to Cuba. United’s move is in line with the larger political environment for U.S.-Cuba relations.

Political Pressure and Lawmaker Influence

Senator Rick Scott of Florida has been a vocal proponent of a harder line on Cuba, including a full ban on travel to the island by Americans. His position reflects a general attitude across the United States shared by some members of Congress that are critical of the Cuban government. In 2017, the president, Donald J. Trump, had restored Cuba to the list of countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism, a position that President Barack Obama had eliminated. Travel restrictions were imposed under Trump, such as a ban on U.S. flights to airports in Cuba outside of the nation’s capital of Havana.

Biden Administration’s Policy Shift

But in a softer stance than President Joe Biden has taken, trig facing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism in January as a goodwill gesture on U.S.-Cuba relations. But Biden’s administration has kept some of the Trump administration’s restrictions in place, particularly on tourism. Americans still cannot travel to Cuba for tourism, but they can make trips for educational or humanitarian purposes.

Travel Restrictions and Safety Concerns

The State Department has issued travel advisories for Cuba, cautioning Americans about crime risks on the island. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Cuba. A tourist visa is also necessary for American visitors and tourists should note that leisure travel still is banned.

Currency and Financial Restrictions

A central question for American travelers to Cuba is the potential use of U.S. credit and debit cards. These cards don’t work on the island, so anyone visiting is encouraged to bring cash. dollars so they can be converted into Cuban currency or pesos and any cash value over $5,000 must be declared when arriving in Cuba. Travelers should be aware of additional money constraints while in Cuba — limitations are set on international financial transactions.

Alternative Airlines and Routes

Although United Airlines has suspended flights from Houston to Havana, other U.S. carriers, such as American Airlines and Southwest, still fly to Cuba. But with United’s cessation of this route, palliative jet lag treatment seekers will have to turn to these other carriers to get their fix of the treatment in the sky. The situation is changing rapidly and travelers should consult airline schedules and government sources for the latest information on access to flights to Cuba.

Staying Informed

With a whole U.S. political and regulatory regime around Cuba shifting, U.S. travelers would be wise to keep an eye on the ball. On the websites of official sources such as the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory page (travel. state. gov) or before embarking at Cuba Travel Services (cubatravelservices. com) offer the latest on travel restrictions, safety concerns and legal requirements for visiting Cuba as an American.
Due to the limbo of U.S. to Cuba travel and then potential air service disruptions, things are still politically volatile and you need to be on top of it as a traveler.
