SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Uber is rolling out a new feature in San Diego that aims to give women riders and drivers “more choice, comfort and control” when using the app. Women in the area can now choose to be matched exclusively with other women for their trips.
Through Uber’s new “Women Preferences” options, the feature allows women riders to select a woman driver when requesting a trip, reserving a ride in advance or setting preferences within the app. Similarly, women drivers can choose to be paired only with women riders — a feature Uber officials say has been among the most-requested nationwide.
“About 75% of women riders say they would like the option to match with women drivers — and we’re listening,” Uber said in a statement announcing the new launch.
After testing the feature in several cities earlier this year — including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Phoenix, and Denver — the company is expanding it to 26 additional cities, with San Diego among the newest markets.
Uber first introduced a women rider preference feature in Saudi Arabia in 2019, following the country’s landmark decision allowing women to drive. Since then, Uber officials say more than 150 million trips have been completed using the feature across 40 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and Poland.
