FLORIDA – Tropical Storm Melissa is gaining strength in the Caribbean, causing widespread travel disruptions across Central Florida as it moves toward hurricane status.
Airlines such as JetBlue, Southwest, and United have issued flight change waivers for travelers heading to destinations like Montego Bay and Kingston, while cruise lines closely monitor the storm’s path to determine potential route adjustments.
The National Hurricane Center reported that Melissa had sustained winds near 65 mph and is expected to intensify into a major hurricane over the weekend.
Ryan Gorman and Dana McKay cover this story and more on The Ryan Gorman Show:
Heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and landslides are forecast for parts of Jamaica and Hispaniola, with rainfall totals potentially exceeding 30 inches.
Officials have issued hurricane warnings for Jamaica and watches for parts of Haiti and eastern Cuba as the storm continues its slow westward movement.
Airports in Florida are preparing for possible weather impacts early next week, as forecasters predict the state’s east coast could experience increased surf, strong rip currents, and gusty winds by Tuesday or Wednesday.
The full impact on U.S. travel remains uncertain and will depend on Melissa’s eventual track and speed.
For many travelers, the storm has already led to cancellations and rerouted plans. Central Florida resident Zim Thompson canceled her long-planned trip to Montego Bay, citing safety concerns and the likelihood of flight delays.
Cruise passengers are also preparing for itinerary changes if conditions worsen.
