Don’t be caught off guard abroad this winter – most trips go smoothly, but staying alert and planning ahead helps you stay safe and avoid accidents.
Be drink aware – have fun this festive season, but don’t overdo it. Remember that measures may be bigger abroad, and some bar staff may pour alcohol without measuring it.
Arrange travel health insurance.
See Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) country advice for safety updates, security advice, travel warnings and entry requirements for all your destinations. You can also use their foreign travel checklist to help you prepare for your trip.
Get a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or check your existing one hasn’t expired. Remember, this only provides access to emergency care in the European Economic Area (EEA) and some other limited countries and is not a substitute for travel insurance.
Make sure your mobile phone works at your destination – check with your provider.
Planning specific activities such as an adventure trip, a cruise, winter sports, or volunteering? Or simply visiting friends and family? Make sure you’re trip-ready and do your own research.
If you’re driving overseas, check UK government driving abroad advice and make sure your insurance covers all destinations.
Travelling with children? The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents provides guidance on staying safe on holiday, including water safety advice.
Take care with your personal safety at all times and follow local advice. This is especially important if you are visiting areas affected by natural hazards such as hurricanes or floods.
Keep checking FCDO country advice while you are away, as situations can change rapidly. When incidents occur that may affect UK travellers, the FCDO will update their travel advice as quickly as possible.
Road traffic accidents cause injuries and deaths worldwide. Whether you are a driver, passenger, or pedestrian, follow road safety rules at all times and never drink and drive.
Take care at cliff edges, heights, and on balconies. Never jump from a balcony into a swimming pool or onto another balcony.
Never take illegal drugs abroad. Even small amounts can result in serious trouble due to strict local laws.
Enjoy alcohol safely abroad. Follow NHS alcohol advice, never mix alcohol with medicines or illegal drugs, and check FCDO advice for local alcohol laws.
Drink spiking with alcohol, drugs, or methanol (fake alcohol) can happen anywhere. You may be more relaxed and off guard abroad.
Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers. If travelling with friends, stick with your mates.
Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of methanol poisoning and seek urgent medical help if you suspect exposure.
If you’re worried about your health after returning home, contact your GP or a local minor injuries unit.
