Travel alert: Updated warning issued for one of the most popular vacation destinations – MLive.com

If you’re planning to visit Mexico in the coming weeks or months, U.S. officials say there are parts of the country that should be avoided at all costs. In a Level 2 travel advisory issued this month, the State Department gave updated guidance for Americans planning to visit Mexico, warning of increased kidnappings, terrorism and crime.
A Level 2 advisory suggests travelers “exercise increased caution” when traveling and is considered the second lowest threat level on the agency’s four-tier scale. However, in this latest update for travel to Mexico, several states are considered a Level 4 “do not travel” and a Level 3 “reconsider travel” zones.
The State Department says Americans should be aware that violent crimes take place in Mexico and that U.S. officials may not be able to help if Americans find themselves in trouble.
“The U.S. government has limited ability to help in many parts of Mexico. U.S. government employees are not allowed to travel to certain high-risk areas,” reads part of the advisory.
If traveling in Mexico, officials advise following the rules that U.S. government employees follow. That includes not traveling alone, not traveling at night, and always using dispatched cabs or ride-share services for travel. If you happen to encounter a road checkpoint, you should comply with police.
While many of Mexico’s most popular tourist areas fall in the Level 2 zone or lower, U.S. officials have labeled these states as “do not travel” areas:
