Manchester Airport has issued some advice for people flying this autumn.
In particular, passengers jetting off for a city break will benefit from the airport’s guide with advice from the best flight times to taking less luggage.
Here are the top tips to follow for city breaks from Manchester Airport.

If you’re going away for a few days, the times of your flights can change how your itinerary looks.
Manchester Airport explains: “A flight out on Friday evening and back on Sunday morning gives you effectively one day to explore your destination – whereas a flight out on Friday morning and back on Sunday evening gives you the best part of three days.”
Hotel rooms are at a premium in the most touristy areas of Europe’s major cities, so if you want the convenience of being close to the action, Manchester Airport warns you to factor it into your budget.
It adds: “If you want to cut costs without skimping on comfort, look at accommodation that is perhaps a little further from the city centre or main tourist attractions, but which is well connected, whether by road, tram or train.
“And if you’re looking for a budget option in the heart of a city, consider a hostel. Many hostels have private rooms available, if the thought of sleeping in a dorm doesn’t appeal to you.”
You could consider using public transport or using the free drop-off facility at the airport.
The airport added: “For forecourt drop-off, the airport has implemented a new barrierless drop-off system, which means people pass through the terminal forecourts quicker and more smoothly, with payment made online or by phone before midnight the following day.
“Parking at the airport may well be more economical than a return taxi fare, particularly if you’re only travelling for a few days.”
It tells passengers to book in advance for the best deals.
Travelling with only hand luggage could mean you save time at both ends of your trip, checking in online and going straight to security when you arrive at the airport.
Check your airline’s hand baggage size restrictions carefully to make sure you’re within the limits allowed to avoid any extra charges.
To reduce the amount of luggage you take, choose clothes that you can mix and match to create a number of different outfits.
Make sure you have warm enough clothes for cooler temperatures at this time of year.

Manchester Airport suggests: “Wear bulkier items of clothing like jeans, hooded jackets and coats to the airport and prioritise packing lighter items of clothing in your bag.”
If you’re heading on a city break, you can expect plenty of walking so make sure your shoes are suitable for different terrains you might come across.
You could leave your sandals and flip flops at home if you’re not planning to relax at a spa or head to the beach.
Check how to use public transport at your destination before you go so you can work out the cheapest way to get around and avoid potentially pricey taxi fares.
Manchester Airport advises: “Dodge data roaming charges by downloading offline maps to your phone before you set off. It’s possible to select an area on Google Maps and download it for use offline, and there are a number of map apps that offer this function as well.
“You can also save important locations as pins on the map, too – like your accommodation and places you want to visit. “
Even if you’re travelling off-peak, you’ll need to book popular attractions in advance.
Manchester Airport says booking these weeks in advance is “strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.”

Booking popular restaurants in advance can also help you get a table and avoid missing out.
Activities such as free walking tours, pop-up festivals, art exhibitions and museums are often free to enter so Manchester Airport recommends making the most of these to help keep the overall cost of your trip down.
The guide comes shortly after Manchester Airport announced it would be moving three more airlines to its newly refurbished Terminal 2.
This change is part of the airport’s £1.3 billion transformation programme that hopes to improve facilities for passengers.
During October and November 2024, 11 airlines made the move to Terminal 2 and now three more will do the same – easyJet, Icelandair and Air Transat.
