A dreamy houseboat with front-row water views is the perfect way to experience Key West.

Summer travel gets all the hype; stretches of long, sunny days, natural wonders to explore, and restaurants with open-air dining are all hallmark experiences of the warm season. But if you happen to live in Florida, you know that early fall is just as special, if not more so. The crowds let up just a bit, and in some places, the prices come down too. I recently stumbled upon an Airbnb in the Florida Keys that is at the top of my travel wish list during this shoulder season. Here’s why: it’s a floating houseboat and the views are simply unparalleled.
I’d argue that anyone who loves the ocean has dreamed of living on a houseboat—if only for a few nights. And this is the exact experience you can look forward to with the Key West Outpost, an eco-vacation for up to four adventurous travelers. Here’s how it works: once you’ve booked your stay, the hosts will pick you up and take you on a brief boat ride to your floating cottage. Once there, you’ll settle in and familiarize yourself with your temporary home. It’s a fully-functional cottage with everything you’ll need for a cozy, comfortable stay.
Given that it’s a houseboat, the size is a bit on the smaller side, but this only adds to the charm. The layout features a roomy front and back deck, a sitting area, a fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a living room (with a futon), a lofted bedroom, and a topside sitting area. The unit is completely solar powered; however, there is also a small generator to power the air conditioning and refrigerator overnight for up to six hours if needed. The bathroom and shower are fully functional, but you’ll get a brief overview of how they work on the boat upon arrival.
So now that we’ve covered the logistics, it’s time to focus on the magic of this spot. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the water views are what travelers rave about most. Waking up with the ocean right at your figurative and literal doorstep never gets old, especially if you can time it right at sunrise.
This is the ideal place to completely disconnect from the grid and enjoy your immediate, beautiful surroundings. It’s a lot like glamping—there’s no WiFi and the amenities may be somewhat limited, but they won’t be missed.
During the day, enjoy an adventure out on the water. The hosts will provide kayaks, paddle boards, and even snorkel gear for your crew to use. If needed, you can request a ride back to the mainland, but chances are you won’t want to! As an add-on, guests can also book an eco-tour excursion to learn more about the area.
So, what do you think? Are you ready to embrace adventure and spend a few nights on this floating Florida Keys houseboat? If so, be sure to check out the official Airbnb listing for the Key West Outpost, and start planning your trip today!
