Although Alberding revitalised the resort, the hotel experienced further periods of decline in the following decades, becoming a boarding house in the early 1970s. By 1975, the hotel had closed its doors.
However, The Vinoy’s story was far from over. A passionate group of locals led the charge to save the hotel, securing its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The push to preserve the property culminated in a successful effort to prevent its demolition in 1984.

In 1990, the hotel was purchased by Frederick Guest, who oversaw a 93 million dollars refurbishment. The Vinoy reopened in 1992 under the name Stouffer Hotel and began welcoming guests once again. In 2002, it became part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, known as The Vinoy Resort and Golf Club, continuing its legacy as a luxury destination on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Today, The Vinoy celebrates its centennial with a dedication to its past and future. A recent 100 million dollars renovation has enhanced the guest experience, adding new dining options and updated amenities.
