Brightline West is a $12 billion project financed by private investment and a $3 billion federal grant awarded last year. The project broke ground in April 2024, and then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other officials lauded the planned route for its speed, efficiency, and environmental considerations.
The system is designed to be fully electric and zero-emission, utilizing high-speed Siemens American Pioneer 220 trains at 45-minute intervals. Trains will average about 186 miles per hour.
Newsweek reported that train tickets could cost $119 for standard class and $133 for premium seating by 2031, based on a bond offering submitted by Brightline West.
According to Brightline, nearly 50 million trips occur each year between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, over 85% of which are via automobile. The new Brightline West route hopes to serve 9 million one-way passengers each year by offering a trip that’s more predictable and free of traffic.
