Winter Storm Enzo has unleashed a rare and powerful snow and ice storm along the Gulf and Southeast coasts, causing widespread travel chaos and bringing potentially historic snowfall totals to parts of the region. Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia are particularly affected by the new Winter Storm Enzo, with United, Delta, Southwest, American, British Airways, and more airlines facing travel disruptions, including over two thousand flights canceled and delayed. From Texas to the Carolinas, residents and travelers are facing hazardous conditions, while airports and highways struggle to keep up with the storm’s impact.
Snow and Ice Blanket the South
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and weather advisories stretching from central Texas to Georgia and the Carolinas. Major cities such as Houston, New Orleans, Tallahassee, Atlanta, and Charleston are under these alerts, signaling that snow, ice, and high winds will make travel treacherous.
In some areas, the storm has brought blizzard conditions, especially in southeast Texas and far southwest Louisiana. Lake Charles, Louisiana, is experiencing near-whiteout conditions, making outdoor travel extremely hazardous.
Widespread Flight Cancellations and Delays
Airports across the affected states are grappling with thousands of flight disruptions. As of now, cancellations and delays include:
- Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH, Texas): 962 cancellations and 5 delays. Airlines impacted include United, Mesa, SkyWest, Spirit, Delta, American Airlines, and more.
- William P. Hobby Airport (HOU, Texas): 265 cancellations. Southwest, Delta, Envoy Air, and SkyWest flights are among those affected.
- New Orleans International Airport (MSY, Louisiana): 241 cancellations. Airlines such as Southwest, United, Delta, and Alaska Airlines are experiencing disruptions.
- Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW, Texas): 156 cancellations and 16 delays. Major carriers impacted include American Airlines, PSA Airlines, Korean Air, and Air France.
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL, Georgia): 133 cancellations and 18 delays. Delta, Lufthansa, Ethiopian Airlines, and JetBlue are among the airlines affected.
Implications for Travelers
The combination of icy roads and grounded flights is stranding travelers across the region. Airlines are working to rebook passengers, but the extent of the disruptions is overwhelming many carriers’ resources.
Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight statuses before heading to the airport. Those on the roads should exercise caution and avoid travel in areas under severe weather warnings.
A Rare Weather Event
Winter Storm Enzo’s reach and intensity are unusual for this region. Snow and ice accumulations have been reported in areas unaccustomed to winter weather, prompting authorities to warn residents to stay indoors and prepare for potential power outages.
As the storm continues to move eastward, additional disruptions are expected in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas. Travelers and residents should stay informed through updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities.
With Winter Storm Enzo’s impact still unfolding, patience and preparation will be key for those affected.
