BUFFALO, N.Y. — Acting Mayor Christopher Scanlon on Thursday night declared a State of Emergency for the City of Buffalo.
The declaration comes as lake effect snow continues to pile up in South Buffalo, where a Travel Advisory is in place from William Street and points south to the city line.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of all residents,” Scanlon said in a statement around 9 p.m. Thursday. “The amount of snowfall and high winds we are experiencing has created hazardous conditions, especially in South Buffalo.
“I strongly urge everyone to stay home if possible and allow our crews to work on clearing the streets and ensuring access for emergency response where needed.”
Of course, people are urged to stay home and avoid any unnecessary travel for the time being as crews attempt to clear the streets and make them passable.
Around 3 p.m. Thursday, Executive Mark Poloncarz issued a countywide state of emergency.
“If people are stuck at a location right now because of a driving ban, we just ask them to wait, wait it out, so the roads can get cleared and we can get you back out on the road safely,” Poloncarz said.
Buffalo residents are encouraged by city officials to sign up for alerts concerning weather updates, closures, and emergencies by texting your zip code to 38276.
