Southern Oregon is heading into a classic early spring pattern beginning Sunday, March 22, where no two days feel exactly the same and conditions shift just enough to keep both travelers and locals paying attention.
Sunday opens the week on relatively steady footing. Across the Rogue Valley, including Grants Pass and Medford, skies are expected to remain partly cloudy with mild daytime temperatures settling into the mid to upper 50s. Morning hours will feel cool, with temperatures starting in the upper 30s before warming through the afternoon. Roads remain dry overall, making it one of the more reliable travel days of the week for both local driving and longer trips along Interstate 5.
Monday and Tuesday continue that stable stretch, with a gradual warming trend building across inland areas. Afternoon highs push closer to the low 60s, especially in valley locations, while coastal influence keeps temperatures slightly cooler to the west. These two days offer some of the best travel conditions of the week, with a mix of sun and passing clouds and only light winds. Visibility remains strong across major corridors, including Highway 199 toward the coast and routes heading north and south through the region.
By midweek, the pattern begins to shift. Wednesday introduces increasing cloud cover, followed by a growing chance of rain into Thursday. These are not expected to be heavy, continuous storms, but rather scattered showers that move through in waves. Even so, pavement conditions will change quickly during these periods, particularly during the early morning and evening hours when temperatures are cooler and roads can become slick. Drivers should anticipate reduced visibility at times, especially in areas with elevation changes or tree cover.
Temperatures during this stretch ease back slightly, with highs returning to the mid to upper 50s and overnight lows hovering in the low 40s. The change is subtle but noticeable, marking the beginning of a more unsettled late-week pattern.
Friday and Saturday bring the most active weather of the period. Rain becomes more consistent, with longer stretches of wet conditions likely across much of southern Oregon. Valley floors will remain rain-dominated, while higher elevations begin to see colder air move in. Mountain passes, including areas along Sexton Summit and toward the Siskiyou range, could experience more challenging conditions, particularly during early morning travel when temperatures are at their lowest.
For those traveling during this time, extra caution will be necessary. Wet roads, reduced traction, and occasional gusts in exposed areas will make for slower, more deliberate driving conditions. While not severe, the weather will demand attention.
By Sunday, March 29, the region begins to settle once again. Showers taper off, clouds begin to break, and temperatures recover slightly into the upper 50s. It is not a full return to dry weather, but it signals a shift back toward the more balanced conditions typical of early spring.
Across the full week, the pattern reflects exactly what southern Oregon is known for this time of year, a steady transition rather than a clean seasonal change. Periods of sunshine are layered between passing systems, and travel conditions can shift within a matter of hours. The most favorable travel windows fall early in the week and again toward the end of the weekend, while mid to late week requires more awareness on the road.
This stretch serves as a reminder that spring in southern Oregon is less about consistency and more about movement, where each day brings a slightly different version of the season taking hold.
