PLANNING THE NEXT 24 HOURS: Most of the area saw about 3-7″ from Wednesday and Wednesday’s night snowfall. A few areas were slightly higher than that, areas well northwest of Madison reported around 0.5-1.0″. Road conditions will improve some by the late moring and early afternoon. We’ll see plenty of sunshine Thursday, but it will also be very cold with wind chills well below zero during the morning. Even during the afternoon wind chills are expected to remain below zero.
EXTENDED FORECAST: There is another ALERT DAY in the forecast for Friday into Saturday. Additional accumulation for this system is likely, with 3 to 6 inches expected in total at this time. There will be two rounds of snowfall with this system. The first round will come Friday afternoon and evening. After a break from the snow late in the night Friday, we may see additional snowfall during the morning and afternoon Saturday. It is possible the second round may stay south of Southern Wisconsin entirely. As far as temperatures, they are going to remain cold. There will be a little bit of improvement in the temperatures Friday and Saturday during the snow. However, not only will highs still be slightly below average (highs in the mid to upper 20s Friday/Saturday), but next week is expected to get even colder, and there are ALERT DAYS in the forecast for dangerously cold wind chills Sunday through Tuesday. Wind chills could drop to as low as -20 degrees Sunday morning and then drop to near -30 degrees Monday morning. Winds will improve a little bit for the middle of next week, but temperatures will still be very cold with highs near 10 and lows below zero for Sunday through next Thursday.
