No lines, no crowds—just dolphins, lagoons and luxury. Here’s why Discovery Cove is paradise found
After nearly two decades as a travel editor, I’ve been fortunate to explore some of the world’s most talked-about destinations. From iconic landmarks to secret getaways, I’ve learned that true gems are often the ones hiding in plain sight—and Discovery Cove Orlando is exactly that.
I’ve been to Orlando more times than I can count—to visit the theme parks, attend family reunions—but somehow I’d missed this tropical escape tucked just minutes from the city’s busiest attractions. For 25 years, Discovery Cove has been offering a different kind of adventure: one where you can swim with dolphins, hand-feed tropical birds and sip a piña colada by a lagoon—all without lines, crowds or chaos.
The moment I stepped through Discovery Cove Orlando’s gates—we arrived around 7:15 a.m., which is ideal for packing it all in—the world went still. The air smelled like jasmine, palm trees swayed overhead and a smiling staff member said, “Welcome to paradise.” Honestly, it felt exactly like that.
The park isn’t just beautiful—it’s thoughtful. It limits attendance to about 1,300 guests a day, so it never feels crowded. It’s also a Certified Autism Center, meaning staff are specially trained to support guests with sensory sensitivities and provide detailed sensory guides to help families plan their day. Their goal: weave sustainability, education, luxury, adventure and comfort all into one experience.
I’m a sucker for a good breakfast, and Discovery Cove’s didn’t disappoint. Fresh fruit, fluffy scrambled eggs, warm pastries and strong coffee—exactly what you need before a full day in the sun. Lunch was just as good: grilled fish tacos, burgers and my personal weakness, soft-serve ice cream. Snacks (even pizza) and drinks are available all day, and yes, select beer and wine are included. You can also upgrade to a premium mixed drink package for around $40 to sip signature cocktails beachside.
No wallet, no stress—just pure ease.
Pulling on my wetsuit (they offer sizes up to 5XL, which as a curvy gal, I loved for its inclusivity), I slipped on a snorkel, complimentary animal-friendly sunscreen and dove into the Grand Reef. Instantly, I felt transported. Thousands of tropical fish shimmered beneath me, rays glided gracefully past, and sunlight danced on the water. It was like snorkeling in a dream.
Tip: The Grand Reef features rocky and uneven surfaces. Wearing water shoes will protect your feet and provide better traction as you navigate the area. Also, don’t miss areas around the paths and bridges leading to islands and hidden grottos, which offer unique underwater views and tend to be less crowded.
Later, I traded my snorkel for a pool-noodle-style float and drifted along the Wind-Away River, passing under waterfalls, through caves and even into the aviary where tropical birds swooped overhead. We did the 30-minute loop at least three times—I lost track of time in the best possible way.
Tip: After you float under the waterfall, look up to see tropical birds—you’re in the aviary!
Speaking of the aviary—this was a highlight I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. The Explorer’s Aviary is home to more than 250 tropical birds, and when you hold out a fruit cup, they flutter right to you. I had a lorikeet perched on my arm, a toucan eyeing my sunglasses and a grin I couldn’t wipe off.
Tip: Get there early because it guarantees the birds will still be hungry, and you’ll see more varieties. There is also a morning “flamingo walk” around 9:15-9:30 a.m., where 15 of the pink beauties strut their stuff and squawk their way through the park. It’s delightful.
If you do one add-on, make it the Dolphin Swim. As a kid, I dreamed of becoming a marine biologist, so finally meeting a dolphin up close in my late 40s is something I’ll never forget. Before entering the water, trainers share fascinating facts about the dolphins’ personalities and habits. Then, one by one, we each met our dolphin. Our group met Roxy, a sassy 27-year-old dolphin (middle-aged in human years), and I like to think we instantly bonded.
I gently felt her skin and held on to her fin as she pulled me through the lagoon. It was one of those rare goosebump moments where you feel connected to something bigger than yourself. But most importantly, it’s a genius, heartfelt way to educate people about the species and promote conservation efforts.
Next came SeaVenture, Discovery Cove’s underwater walking tour. With a special helmet that lets you breathe normally, you literally walk on the ocean floor, surrounded by colorful fish, huge manta rays and vibrant coral. It’s surreal, peaceful and perfect for anyone who’s ever dreamed of scuba diving but isn’t certified. We even peeked through a “window” into the shark tank, where they swam and napped only inches away.
For those looking to make the day even more indulgent, the private cabanas scattered throughout the park offer the ultimate upgrade in relaxation. Tucked amid lush landscaping, each cabana is like your own private island retreat—complete with cushioned loungers, a ceiling fan, towels, hammocks, a private locker and a cooler stocked with chilled drinks. A friendly attendant checks in throughout the day, making sure your glass never empties and your experience stays perfectly carefree. While there are many lockers and lounge chairs scattered around the park you can use for free, the cabana is an excellent option if you have a larger group, family or just want to be pampered a little more.

I left Discovery Cove feeling relaxed, happy and sun-warmed—in my experience, a rare feat for any Orlando trip. For once, I didn’t feel like I needed a vacation after my vacation. Sometimes, paradise really does exist.
