TAMPA, Fla. — More than half of all flights remained canceled or delayed at Tampa International Airport on Tuesday.
The impact of severe weather, including snow and strong winds in parts of the country Monday continued to affect flights at airports nationwide amid an already busy spring break season in the Tampa Bay area.
Some passengers said they must spend the night at the airport after their flights were canceled including Olayinka Ikotune of Maryland.
“Even if I curse out and get mad about it, it’s not going to speed up the process because the plane isn’t here at all,” Ikotune said. “Just got to tough it out.”
Like others, Ikotune has nowhere to go but his phone as he waits for hours for boarding time.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, TPA officials reported 301 delays and 53 cancellations out of 541 flights.
Sarah Phylan of Cincinnati said the closest she can get to home by Tuesday night is Atlanta.
“I’m ready to be home. Seasoned traveler, though, so go with the flow,” Phylan said.
Despite the impact the weather continues to have on flights, couple, Bill Bigrigg and Sarah Moran of Cleveland, said they made the most of their extended stay.
“It’s a pretty scary situation, especially when you have major things brewing at home, but you can only do with what you have to do,” Bigrigg said.
Airports are expected to get busier with spring break travel season in full swing, and as fans are expected to fly out for March Madness. Airport officials expect 3.1 million passengers until mid-April.
Officials encourage passengers to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.
