Overnight traffic delays expected on Route 29 as work continues on pedestrian bridge – WVIR

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Vehicles on Route 29 the next few nights can expect delays between the areas of Seminole Court and Zan Road.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is placing beams across Route 29 that will support a new pedestrian bridge.
“The placement of these beams represents a major milestone in the construction of the bridge because obviously that’s what the deck and other supporting features of the bridge are sitting on top of,” VDOT Spokesperson Lou Hatter said.
In order to put the beams in place, VDOT will be stopping traffic in the northbound and southbound lanes for intermittent 20-minute periods. Traffic will be released after each beam is secured.
The bridge will span across nine lanes of traffic and connect two shopping centers with heavy foot traffic, the Seminole Square Shopping Center and the Shops at Stonefield.
It is also an area where multiple pedestrians have died while crossing Route 29.
“This is an effort to make that road and intersection safer for people who are not driving vehicles,” Hatter said.
There are alternative routes for drivers to avoid the area via Commonwealth Drive and Hillsdale Drive.
“Both connect through and it will keep people off 29 so they don’t have to worry about those closures,” Hatter said. “That would be my recommendation.”
The estimated completion for the bridge is October of next year.
This project is the next phase of a $30-million contract to improve the Hydraulic corridor. The Hydraulic roundabout was the projects most recent completion.
