AmeriStarRail, a Delaware-registered corporation, has unveiled a megoproject in which it will run a train at high speed between Los Angeles and New York in 72 hours or fewer. Its prospective route through the California High Desert will be a decidedly greener and faster alternative between driving and flying by airplane across America.
The project, pitched to Amtrak in June 2025, seeks a partnership that would see the Transcontinental Chief become a vital link between the U.S. coasts. This rail system would cover a wide range of cities, including Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Victorville, Barstow, the Grand Canyon, Kansas City, Chicago, and New York. It aims to replace some of Amtrak’s existing routes, including the Southwest Chief, and integrate with other major rail services.

The proposed Transcontinental Chief offers several key benefits for travelers:
- Speed: Connecting Los Angeles to New York in less than 72 hours would dramatically reduce travel time, making it a faster alternative to driving or flying.
- Eco-Friendly: High-speed rail is a green transportation option, helping to reduce carbon emissions compared to cars and planes.
- Convenience: The rail service would have multiple stops in major cities, providing easier access for travelers from smaller towns like Kansas City and Victorville.
With AmeriStarRail’s plan, travelers could soon experience cross-country rail service that cuts down the hassle of traditional road trips and avoids the delays and stress associated with air travel. For business travelers, tourists, and anyone looking for a comfortable, quick journey across the country, this high-speed rail service would be a game-changer.
Brightline West: A Competitor in California’s Rail Market
While AmeriStarRail focuses on its coast-to-coast high-speed rail system, Brightline West, a competitor, is working on its own high-speed line between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California. The Brightline West rail project is set to reduce the four-hour travel time between the two cities to just two hours, making it another attractive option for travelers looking to bypass long road trips or flights. This $12 billion project, which broke ground in April 2024, will use zero-emission electric trains and is expected to begin service by 2025.
The Challenges Ahead for AmeriStarRail
Despite the exciting possibilities, there are hurdles to overcome before AmeriStarRail can begin construction. Victorville Mayor Elizabeth Becerra has expressed concerns about the feasibility of the project, particularly regarding access to BNSF tracks and securing the necessary funding. There are also logistical challenges, such as coordinating train schedules, obtaining permits, and building new stations along the route.
For now, AmeriStarRail has set a target of May 10, 2026, for the launch of its service, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup and the U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations. The company is optimistic that the Transcontinental Chief will help boost U.S. rail travel, create job opportunities, and bring a profitable new option to the country’s transportation network.
The Future of U.S. Rail Travel: A New Golden Age?
High-speed rail systems like AmeriStarRail’s Transcontinental Chief and Brightline West are part of a larger movement to revitalize rail travel in the United States. With improvements in infrastructure and a focus on sustainability, rail could become a major part of the U.S. transportation ecosystem. For travelers, this means faster, greener, and more comfortable options to get from one coast to the other, as well as easier access to more regional destinations.
In the coming years, travelers may no longer have to rely on long car rides or delayed flights. Whether it’s for business or leisure, high-speed rail could make cross-country travel both more efficient and enjoyable, all while reducing the carbon footprint of travel.
Conclusion: High-Speed Rail is Coming to the U.S.
Transcontinental Chief system proposal for high-speed rails is a bold step towards transforming the way Americans will move across the continent. Although the project continues to be marred with challenges in funding, permits, and logistics, any benefits it can offer for travellers are otherwise glaring. By offering a faster, eco-sensitive, and convenient way of transport as compared to motoring or airplanes, the Transcontinental Chief can bring about a new era in train travel. Continue tracking this sector as AmeriStarRail battles for this behemoth project to materialise in 2026.
Meanwhile, there are opportunities for growing the network of high speed trains as a cleaner option for traveling in America.
