Noem Pushes Sweeping Travel Ban After D.C. Attack by Afghan Immigrant – News Radio 1200 WOAI

KTRH-AM covering local news from Houston and across Texas.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says she wants a sweeping new travel ban, telling President Trump that some countries are sending dangerous people into the U.S. In a post on X, she accused some immigrants of draining public resources and said the nation wasn’t built for what she called “foreign invaders.” Her message ended bluntly: “We don’t want them. Not one.”
The push comes on the heels of an attack in Washington, D.C., where an Afghan immigrant allegedly shot two National Guard members just blocks from the White House. Investigators say the suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, entered the country legally in 2021 through the Biden-era Operation Allies Welcome program. Noem argues the case proves the vetting system under that program wasn’t strong enough.
DHS hasn’t said which countries could be targeted or when any ban might be put into place. The White House also hasn’t weighed in on what the plan could look like. Federal investigators say the D.C. shooting case remains open.
