The U.S. State Department’s updated international travel page now features an interactive global advisory map showing countries listed under its higher-risk travel warning levels.
The interactive map allows travelers to click on any country to see its advisory level and the reasons behind it.
Countries are ranked using four levels of caution: Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions,” Level 2, “Exercise increased caution (especially in higher-risk areas)”, Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” due to security risks, and Level 4, “Do not travel.”
The State Department updates the map daily and assigns levels based on risks such as crime, conflict, terrorism, health concerns and civil unrest.
Travelers can also search for a specific country on the map to see its advisory level and the reasons behind it. Each country is color-coded by risk level: Level 1 is blue, Level 2 is yellow and Levels 3 and 4 are red.
The State Department’s interactive map shows danger zones across much of the world. As of Dec. 26, 22 countries appear under the Level 4 “Do Not Travel” category, including Afghanistan, Belarus, Haiti and Lebanon.
The designations are based on risks such as crime, terrorism, civil unrest and other safety concerns.
Travelers can take additional steps to stay informed and protect themselves while abroad.
The State Department recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows U.S. citizens to receive alerts and make it easier for embassies or consulates to contact them in case of an emergency.
Travelers can stay informed by following the State Department’s travel guidance, including updates on global events affecting travel.
The guidance offers tips for safe travel preparation, provides information on laws abroad and gives instructions for crisis situations.
