Nevada town named one of 10 best Western US retirement spots by Travel and Leisure

Carson City has been ranked one of the best places to retire in the Western United States, landing at No. 7 on Travel and Leisure’s new list of top retirement destinations.

The ranking is part of the magazine’s Destination: Retirement series, created in partnership with Investopedia. The list considers factors such as housing affordability, cost of living, access to health care, taxes, and proximity to cultural and outdoor amenities. The 2025 report includes 10 cities across seven Western states.

What makes Carson City, Nevada a good place to retire?

Nevada’s capital was noted for its mix of outdoor access, walkable downtown and favorable tax structure. Carson City residents benefit from no state income tax and exemptions on Social Security and pre-tax retirement withdrawals. The city, with a population of about 58,000, is located near Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada, offering hiking, biking, skiing and a range of seasonal events and festivals.
