Miami-Dade County, FL – Firefighters are working to contain a 3,600-acre brush fire in southern Miami-Dade County that has caused major traffic delays and road closures for those traveling to and from the Florida Keys.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to reports of the fire around 1:17 p.m. Tuesday near Card Sound Road and the 40800 block, deploying both ground and air crews.
To allow emergency responders access to additional water sources, authorities shut down Card Sound Road and US 1 in both directions.
While traffic on the 18-Mile Stretch began moving slowly Tuesday night, Monroe County officials advised drivers to steer clear of the area.
US 1 reopened after eight hours, but Card Sound Road remains closed as of early Wednesday.
The fire is 20% contained, and no injuries or structural damage have been reported.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is working closely with the Florida Forest Service to bring the flames under control, though swampy conditions in the area have made it difficult to maneuver heavy firefighting equipment.
Officials are advising those with respiratory conditions to avoid outdoor exposure, keep vehicle windows shut, and use air conditioning to recirculate indoor air.
Travelers impacted by the closures expressed frustration, with some opting to wait out the delays in nearby hotels.
While wildfires are not unusual in March, the peak fire season for South Florida typically runs from April through June.
