Lufthansa strike
A Lufthansa cabin crew strike has forced the cancellation of more than 900 flights across Germany, disrupting travel plans for over 90,000 passengers. The one-day walkout affects operations at major hubs including Frankfurt and Munich airports, with widespread delays and cancellations reported.
At Frankfurt Airport, around 580 flights were cancelled out of approximately 1,350 scheduled arrivals and departures. Munich Airport saw about 400 flights affected, as cabin crew from Lufthansa and its regional subsidiary CityLine joined the strike at nine German airports.
The strike, called by the Independent Flight Attendants Organization, began shortly after midnight and runs until 10 pm local time (2000 GMT). The union said the action came after Lufthansa failed to present a negotiable offer in ongoing wage talks.
“It would have been avoidable,” said Joachim Vazquez Buerger, chair of the Independent Flight Attendants Organization. He added that the union had avoided striking during the peak Easter travel period but warned the disruption could still impact passengers returning home after the holiday.
Lufthansa has urged travellers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and said it is notifying affected passengers directly. The airline has activated a contingency plan, including deploying larger aircraft on some routes and arranging additional flights through subsidiaries.
The disruption marks the latest in a series of labour disputes affecting Lufthansa this year. In mid-February, cabin crew joined pilots from the Vereinigung Cockpit union in a joint one-day strike that led to similar large-scale cancellations.
The Independent Flight Attendants Organization had previously voted overwhelmingly in late March to authorize strike action after negotiations with the airline broke down. Further disruption cannot be ruled out if talks fail to progress.
