Ohio and Kentucky use a system of snow emergencies that range between levels one and three, while Indiana uses a similar system of travel advisories that use the colors of yellow, orange and red. The emergencies/advisories in all three states mean the same thing. An explanation of the different levels can be found below.
A Level 1 Snow Emergency or “yellow” travel advisory is issued when motorists are advised to take extra caution on the roads due to hazardous conditions being present from accumulations of snow/and or ice.
A Level 2 Snow Emergency or “orange” travel advisory is issued when roadways have the potential to be very hazardous to drivers when heavy snow accumulation and extremely icy conditions are present. Only motorists whose travel is absolutely necessary should be on the roads.
A Level 3 Snow Emergency or “red” travel advisory is issued when roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.
