Japan’s tourism sector continued its upward trajectory in July 2025, achieving new milestones despite facing a few setbacks. With a remarkable 3.43 million international arrivals, the country set a record for the highest number of foreign visitors ever recorded in July, marking a 4.4% increase compared to the same month last year. This growth comes at a time when global travel is still recovering from past disruptions, highlighting Japan’s strong appeal as a travel destination for both leisure and business.
Strong Growth Amid Challenges

The tourism boom in Japan has been one of the most significant trends in Asia’s travel landscape. July’s record-breaking numbers were a clear indicator of the country’s growing popularity. Despite some regional challenges, Japan’s diverse attractions, rich cultural heritage, and unique blend of modern and traditional experiences continue to draw international tourists in droves.
However, the month wasn’t without its obstacles. One of the main factors affecting the growth rate was a substantial dip in arrivals from Hong Kong, which saw a sharp 36.9% decrease in travelers. The drop was largely attributed to disruptions caused by Typhoon-related flight cancellations. This was compounded by growing concerns among travelers in Hong Kong about the possibility of earthquakes, further dampening the region’s travel sentiment. South Korea also experienced a 10.4% drop in visitor numbers, contributing to a slower growth rate for the month. This marked the slowest monthly increase in international arrivals in 2025, but even with these declines, Japan managed to surpass expectations.
Regional Variations and Global Growth
While the number of visitors from Hong Kong and South Korea declined, the overall influx of international tourists remained strong, especially from other major markets. A key factor in this sustained growth is the relatively weak yen, which continues to make Japan an attractive destination for travelers looking for better value for their money.
The growth from mainland China has been particularly impressive, with arrivals increasing by 25.5%. This rise can be attributed to the steady recovery of China’s outbound tourism, as well as Japan’s growing appeal as a destination for Chinese travelers. China has long been one of the largest sources of international visitors to Japan, and the strong performance in July shows that the demand for travel to Japan remains robust despite external challenges.
Similarly, the United States has proven to be a major contributor to Japan’s tourism growth. Visitor numbers from the US increased by 10.3%, indicating a consistent interest in Japan as a destination for American tourists. US travelers have shown a growing preference for Japan’s unique combination of cultural experiences, urban attractions, and natural beauty, making it one of the leading outbound destinations for Americans traveling to Asia.
Japan’s Resilience Amid Global Challenges
Despite the temporary setbacks in specific markets, Japan’s tourism resilience is evident in the overall performance of 2025. As the world recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other disruptions, Japan has emerged as a top choice for travelers seeking cultural immersion, safety, and diverse experiences. The country’s sophisticated infrastructure, world-class hospitality, and comprehensive tourism campaigns have played a crucial role in its ability to continue attracting international visitors.
In particular, Japan’s tourism sector has benefited from a concerted effort by the government and the tourism board to promote regional destinations beyond the well-trodden path of Tokyo and Kyoto. Destinations like Hokkaido, Okinawa, and the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu have been heavily marketed to international visitors, offering a variety of experiences ranging from nature-based activities to historical and cultural tourism. This diversification has helped Japan tap into a broader demographic of travelers.
Year-to-Date Performance
Looking at the broader picture for 2025, Japan’s tourism industry has shown impressive growth in the first seven months of the year. In total, Japan welcomed 24.9 million international tourists between January and July, a significant 18.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This surge in arrivals indicates a strong and sustained recovery for the sector, with expectations for continued growth in the coming months.
The rise in tourism numbers is particularly notable given the challenges faced by the global economy. Rising inflation, the fluctuating value of currencies, and geopolitical tensions have all played a role in shaping travel trends, yet Japan has managed to stay ahead of the curve. Its appeal is underscored by the fact that, despite external pressures, tourists are still flocking to the country in ever-increasing numbers.
Outlook for the Future
With the peak summer months now behind, Japan’s tourism sector remains cautiously optimistic about the rest of the year. The government and tourism authorities are focusing on maintaining and expanding the gains made during the first half of 2025. Key strategies include further improving infrastructure, enhancing tourist experiences, and leveraging digital technologies to attract travelers from emerging markets.
In addition to attracting visitors from traditional sources like the US, China, and South Korea, Japan is focusing on diversifying its visitor base by reaching out to new markets in Southeast Asia, Europe, and even Latin America. With events like the 2025 World Expo in Osaka on the horizon, Japan’s tourism industry is poised to maintain its upward momentum, creating more opportunities for global travelers to experience its unique culture and breathtaking landscapes.
As Japan continues to draw tourists from around the globe, the country’s tourism boom remains a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its hospitality sector, setting the stage for an even more vibrant tourism future in 2025 and beyond.
