Aviation sector employees in Italy and Greece have announced strikes that may impact travelers, particularly families during the UK’s school break and those heading into the Easter holiday period. Passengers are advised to regularly check flight statuses and be prepared for delays and cancellations.
Italy: EasyJet Flight Attendants Strike
In Italy, EasyJet flight attendants, represented by Italian trade unions FILT, CGIL, and UIL, are scheduled to strike on April 9 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm CET. The strike is expected to affect flights to and from Milan and Naples airports. EasyJet has assured passengers that efforts are underway to minimize disruption, and impacted customers will be contacted directly with options to reschedule.
Greece: Air Traffic Controllers Walkout
The industrial action in Italy coincides with a 24-hour strike planned by Greek air traffic controllers, organized by the public sector employee federation ADEDY. This walkout, also scheduled for April 9, is part of a larger labor dispute in Greece, with demands for reinstating holiday bonuses, wage increases, and addressing the housing crisis.
The Greek Air Traffic Controllers’ Association warned that air traffic control services in Greece are facing significant challenges. It cited staffing shortages and outdated equipment as factors leading to ongoing delays. During the strike, air traffic control will be restricted to medical, search and rescue, humanitarian, military, and emergency flights, leaving commercial flights to face the brunt of the disruption.
Travelers’ Advice
Given the widespread impact across both Italy and Greece, travelers are urged to check their flight statuses regularly and plan for possible delays or cancellations.
