If you’re hitting the road this holiday season, here’s how to save on gas and avoid pricey fill-ups with just a little planning.
Reward Programs
Most gas stations offer reward programs and give discounts on fuel. It typically works by signing up for the program through an app or website. For every purchase you make, you earn points toward fuel discounts.
A lot of gas stations will collaborate with grocery stores.
Your best bet is to enroll in a rewards program for stations you frequent — including new ones you’ll use on your trip. And remember, always check to see when your points expire.

Double-dip your perks
Membership programs like Amazon Prime and Walmart+ also offer fuel savings.

Prime members in the U.S. can save a total of 10 cents per gallon at BP, Amoco and participating ampm convenience stores.
From 10/17-12/26, Prime members can save 25 cents when fueling up on Friday only.
Walmart+ members can also save 10 cents per gallon at over 13,000 stations nationwide, including Exxon, Mobil, Walmart, and Murphy Stations. Although the savings are currently 5 cents per gallon in Alabama and Oklahoma.
If you are a member at either Costco, Sam’s Club, or BJs, you can save anywhere from 5 to 25 cents a gallon on gas, according to the personal finance site Kiplinger.

You’re probably already using a map app. Apps like GasBuddy and Waze can show real-time gas prices near you, helping you save both time and money.
