Commuting around Metro Vancouver this week may be more chaotic than usual due to several road closures throughout the region.
Drivers heading to and through Langley are advised to plan ahead for heavy traffic on Highway 1 over the weekend due to ongoing construction work.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced that lane closures are taking place on 56th Avenue and 264th Street on the south side of the interchange starting on Friday, June 13, at 7 p.m.
Traffic will merge to single lanes and at times use single-lane alternating traffic patterns until Monday, June 16, at 5:30 a.m.
“The lane closures are needed for the continued construction of the 264th Street interchange, advancing the widening of Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley,” said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit in a bulletin. “Access to local businesses will not be affected by the work.
“To avoid anticipated heavy congestion and travel delays, drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes during the closure window and are reminded to obey all signage and posted speed limits. Patience is appreciated while this critical work is underway.”
The lane closures in Langley follow an ongoing closure of the northbound off-ramp (Exit 27) in Vancouver until Friday, June 13, to allow city crews to complete essential sewer upgrades on East 1st Avenue.

This also means there will be no left turn onto the Highway 1 northbound on-ramp from East 1st Avenue.
Westbound drivers can detour on East Hastings or McGill Street to avoid the closure. However, the ministry is warning that “additional travel time” is likely during the week.
Additionally, the Surrey Police Service issued a media release on Wednesday morning, warning Metro Vancouver residents of a large Outlaw Motorcycle Gang presence between June 12 and June 15, which will be part of a Hells Angels procession.

The procession is expected to draw over 700 motorcyclists, starting at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday morning in Coquitlam, and will end at a banquet hall in the 12300 block of Patullo Place in Surrey.
“In Surrey, intersections and traffic are expected to experience delays northbound from Highway 1 on Highway 15, Highway 17 to Bridgeview Drive, Bridgeview Drive to King George Boulevard, and King George Boulevard to 120th Street,” SPS said in the release.
And thousands of world-class athletes are set to lace up their sneakers and strap on their swim goggles this weekend for the T100 Triathlon World Tour, which is coming to the city for the first time from Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 15. Commuters are being warned that traffic will be impacted in parts of Vancouver.

According to the Professional Triathletes Organisation, which is teaming up with Do North Events for the B.C. debut, several major roads will be closed to ensure that the massive event happens smoothly.
