It's no secret that Aussie travellers have an increasing appetite for East Asia in recent years.
Australian tourism to Japan jumped by 50 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year, and visits to South Korea rose by almost a third from pre-COVID figures.
But if you want something a bit more off the beaten track – and with much more to explore – why not book a trip to China in 2025?

Now is the perfect time for Aussies to visit this gorgeous and diverse country, according to Intrepid Travel. The travel experts have shared a few reasons why.
In 2025, Australians can travel to China far easier than in previous years thanks to China's updated Visa rules.
Australian passport holders are now permitted to visit China for business, tourism, family visits, transit, and exchange purposes for 30 days visa-free, a trial introduced on November 30, 2024 that will run through to the end of 2025.
This change only applies to mainland China, where the visa was previously in place. Speak to a travel professional if you intend to visit for longer than 30 days, as it may be difficult to acquire a permit to stay.
"Travellers can now skip the often lengthy visa application process, making spontaneous trips more feasible," said Natalie Kidd, Managing Director of Asia for Intrepid Travel.

Intrepid Australia and New Zealand bookings to China saw an 86 per cent increase in bookings post policy changes between the first half of 2024 and the end of the year.
"Combined with increased flight availability and streamlined travel infrastructure, it's never been more convenient to visit China," Natalie adds.
Arguably the biggest reason to visit China is its unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty.
"Travellers are looking for opportunities to explore iconic landmarks like the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors while also connecting with local communities, sampling authentic cuisine, and learning about traditions from knowledgeable local guides," said Natalie.
China is also famous for its diverse, delicious food cultures. Sample famous dishes including kung pao chicken, Peking roast duck, Mapo tofu and char sui.

As China is very large – approximately 9.5 million square metres – it has many climates suited to different times of the year.
Natalie advises Australian travellers to visit during the spring or autumn months, as the country generally experiences warm and dry weather during this period.
"However, from the rugged mountain interior of Emei Shan to the glittering coastal city of Shanghai, China is home to a diverse range of landscapes and the best time to visit can depend entirely on which parts of the country you'll be travelling to," she said.
According to Intrepid, couples' bookings are higher than group and solo bookings to China for the Australian and New Zealand market.
Interestingly, most of these couple bookings fall within 61-70 age range.
However, looking at the global market, solo bookings are the highest overall.
