Rio de Janeiro travelers may encounter RIOgaleão–Tom Jobim International Airport (GIG) and Santos Dumont Airport (SDU). GIG handles a broad international and domestic network, while SDU is close to central Rio and commonly serves domestic flying.
Confirm the airport and flight type
Read GIG or SDU on the ticket and use the full airport name when arranging transportation. Airline schedules and route restrictions can change, so verify the operating airport directly with the airline.
Map the airport to the Rio destination
Centro, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Barra da Tijuca and cruise-related destinations create different road or public-transport plans. Compare the expected journey for the actual arrival time.
Use official transportation channels
At GIG, use airport-listed taxi, app pickup and public-transport locations. At SDU, follow current Infraero and local transit guidance. Avoid unsolicited transportation offers and confirm the vehicle before entering.
Protect a GIG-SDU transfer
The airports are separate and connected through city transportation. A same-day change can be affected by baggage, traffic and weather. Build a large buffer and verify whether the airline protects the connection.
Plan the return around traffic and terminal access
Rio travel times can vary considerably. Recheck the flight airport, terminal and pickup location before leaving the accommodation, particularly when the itinerary changed after booking.
