London is served by several airports, and Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW) and Stansted (STN) appear frequently in international and regional searches. Each sits in a different direction from central London and uses a different mix of rail, coach, taxi and road connections.
Start with the London station or neighborhood
Identify the hotel, station or onward destination before choosing the airport. Paddington, Victoria, Liverpool Street and other London hubs are not interchangeable. A direct connection to the right side of London can be more valuable than a small airfare difference.
Heathrow offers several central-London routes
Heathrow connects through the Elizabeth line, London Underground, Heathrow Express, coaches, taxis and road transport. The best option depends on the terminal and final destination. Check planned engineering work and the last useful connection for late arrivals.
Gatwick and Stansted use different rail corridors
Gatwick rail services connect with several London stations, while Stansted Express serves Liverpool Street and related stops. Confirm the exact operator, station and ticket conditions instead of assuming every airport train arrives at the same central terminal.
Price the return journey too
An early departure may require a hotel change, coach, taxi or airport-area overnight stay if rail service has not started. Compare the outbound and return airport access before purchasing a flight that looks convenient in only one direction.
Leave room for airport changes
A connection that switches London airports is a ground transfer, not a simple terminal change. Immigration, baggage collection, surface transportation and a second check-in can require many hours. Avoid a tight split-airport itinerary.
