Ground stops issued at Reagan, Dulles, and BWI airports amid thunderstorm warning – WUSA9

WASHINGTON — Storms swept through the D.C. region on Sunday, and Reagan National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles Airport (IAD), and Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) were placed on ground stops as a result. according to the Federal Aviation Administration
The stops at the DC area airports came as WUSA9 meteorologists reported a Weather Impact Alert for the DMV through 8 p.m., as severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of the area. 
BWI, DCA, and IAD have issued a ground stop through at least 9 p.m.
BWI is now experiencing departure delays up to 60 minutes due to ongoing ground stops.
DCA had its ground delays scheduled until 11:59 p.m., “due to thunderstorms,” according to the FAA, with an average delay of 1 hour 2 minutes. 
At IAD, ground delays were scheduled to last until 5:59 p.m., with departures to Dulles delayed by an average of 30 minutes. 
WUSA9 Meteorologist Miri Marshall noted that storms were likely to pass through the area, with severe storm warnings mostly impacting Northern Virginia and parts of Maryland into the early evening Sunday. 
“Storms packing heavy rain and lightning have moved across the DMV.  Flash Flood warnings have been issued for Fairfax, including Great Falls until 4:30 p.m.,” Marshall said. “Severe thunderstorm warnings have also been issued for areas such as Charles, Alexandria, Prince George’s, Fairfax until 2:30 p.m.  These storms are capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts.  Doppler has tracked more than 400 lightning strikes since the storms started. ”
