Many golf tournaments take place at courses that are not served like a downtown arena. The key question is often how you will get from the hotel to the grounds early in the morning and back after thousands of spectators leave.
That can make a rental car useful, but only after you check parking rules and tournament shuttles. Some events require spectators to park at remote lots and ride organized transportation to the course.
