BRAINERD — Freezing rain could make holiday travel tricky starting late Christmas Day in the Brainerd lakes area.
The National Weather Service’s forecast on Thursday, Dec. 25, calls for a chance of freezing rain after 9 p.m., followed by a chance of freezing rain and sleet from 9 p.m. to midnight then a chance of freezing rain after midnight.

Little or no accumulation is expected, the weather service reported, but motorists are still advised to use caution when traveling on area roadways.
“There is a 20 to 50 percent chance of this system causing winter storm impacts that could cause travel delays and difficulties,” the weather service reported.
The high temperature Christmas day in Brainerd is forecast to be 31 degrees. The normal high for this time of year in Brainerd is 23 degrees.
Another system is expected to bring above normal temperatures through Saturday, with a shift to Friday and Saturday being the warmest of the seven day period with widespread highs near or above freezing. The high temperature in Brainerd is forecast to be 36 degrees Friday and Saturday.
The system also could bring another round of precipitation, though the type of precipitation was still in question Tuesday afternoon.
“Depending on that track, we could see another round of mixed precipitation with rain, freezing rain, and snow all possible outcomes,” the weather service reported. “However, (weather models) have the low pressure center anywhere from Lake Winnipeg to the Twin Cities on Saturday so we`ll leave a discussion of the details to a day with better agreement. What is in better alignment is that the departure of this system should bring in a quick blast of arctic air with temperatures at least in the single digits for the end of the weekend and into next week.”
High temperatures in Brainerd are forecast to be 7 degrees on Sunday and 11 degrees on Monday.
