WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Summer travel is in full swing, and while many families have already taken their vacations, others are still plotting the perfect getaway.
To help travelers make the most of their budgets, South Florida–based travel writer Skye Sherman joined ARC Florida on Tuesday morning to share her favorite cost-saving tips.
Sherman says one of her golden rules for saving money is simple: don’t check a bag.
"I always travel with just a carry-on and a backpack," she said. "You avoid baggage fees, skip the hassle, and never worry about losing your luggage."
When it comes to airfare, Sherman recommends using Google Flights to find the best prices.
"It's not trying to sell you something like third-party sites often do," she explained. "You get clean data, and their price tracking tool tells you whether fares are about to rise or drop."

Sherman encouraged viewers to consider local destinations, citing her recent family getaway to Jensen Beach and Hutchinson Island.
"We live in paradise," she said. "You don’t have to go far to find something fresh and relaxing."
She also pointed out the convenience of having access to three international airports — Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami — as well as Orlando via Brightline, making direct flights to nearly anywhere an affordable option.
For travelers exploring new places, Sherman suggests browsing Google Maps and looking for yellow-shaded areas, which usually indicate hubs for dining and attractions.
"Some of the best experiences come from food trucks or small coffee shops,” she said. "Talk to locals—they know the hidden gems."
