Italy, the beloved holiday destination of millions of Europeans, is introducing stricter environmental regulations. From 1 October 2025, diesel cars with emission standards Euro 5 or lower will be banned from many northern Italian cities. This does not mean you have to cancel your trip, but good preparation is crucial from now on.
The new rules apply in four popular regions: Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto. Well-known attractions such as Lake Garda, Milan, Verona and Venice are therefore subject to the diesel ban. The measure is intended to reduce air pollution in the heavily polluted Po Valley.
If you have a diesel car from before the Euro 6 standard (which has been in effect since 2014), you will no longer be allowed to enter cities with more than 2025 inhabitants from October 30.000. Outside urban areas, you will still be allowed to drive normally for the time being. Check your registration certificate to see if your vehicle falls under the Euro 5 standard, or consult the RDW.
The rules differ per region:
Anyone who does not comply with the rules risks a fine of €168. Repeated violations can even result in a one-month driving ban.
Nothing will change until the fall of 2025. So for summer vacationers in 2025, there is no reason to panic yet. But plan your fall trip or your trip in 2026 with a little extra attention. Consider trading in your diesel for a gasoline car or a electric car or choose to travel with the bus or the train.
