Cold Weather and Air Travel Alerts – KCBD

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – There is an EXTREME COLD WARNING (dark blue on the map), issued by the National Weather Service, for the northern and western South Plains, the Panhandle, and eastern New Mexico until noon today (Tuesday). There also is a COLD WEATHER ADVISORY (not highlighted) for the remainder of the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area until noon today (Tuesday).

Wind chill temperatures early this morning dipped as low as 20 degrees below zero in the far northern viewing area, from 5 to 10 below zero in the Lubbock area, and to five below zero in much of the rest of the viewing area. Dress appropriately, in layers with a wind blocking material as the outer layer. Protect your fingers and ears. Limit your time outside to just a few minutes.

Hypothermia and frost bite are possible in just 30 minutes in these conditions.

Actual air temperatures dipped to near zero over the far northwestern viewing area with single-digits common from Lubbock and the western and northern counties in the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area. Lubbock’s low temperature, as of this writing, was 6°. It’s the coldest here since 5° on January 17 of last year.

Traveling by air today? Flight to or routed through Houston? Both Hobby and Bush airports shut down at midnight last night due to an incoming storm. Ice and record snowfall is possible. Lubbock flights to and from Houston have been cancelled. Fliers are advised to check with their respective airline.

Total snow accumulations of 2-6 inches are possible across Southeast TX and Southwest LA. Some areas could see as much as 10 inches of snow.

Locally, temperatures will moderate this afternoon and in the days ahead. The anticipated pattern supports dry conditions with occasional breezy periods through the weekend.

This afternoon sunny, with a west then southwest wind increasing to 10 to 20 mph, with gusts around 30 mph or so possible, helping to warm the area into the mid-30s. That’s about 20 degrees below average for the season. If the wind does not develop as expected temperatures will fall short of this forecast.
Clear, breezy, and cold tonight with lows about five degrees below average for late January. Wind chills late tonight are likely to dip into the single-digits and teens.

Tomorrow through the weekend generally fair. Temperatures will peak about five degrees below average for the date tomorrow, ten to fifteen degrees below Thursday, and then near average Friday.

You can expect cold nights and early mornings, though not as cold as the past few, with Lubbock-area lows generally in the 20s.
