United Airlines expands routes to Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego and Washington DC from SFO, unveiling its largest schedule ever to boost travel, tourism and global links.
The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is preparing for a record-breaking summer travel season in 2026 as United Airlines unveils its largest-ever flight schedule from the airport. United’s summer 2026 expansion will include 28 additional flights to some of the most in-demand domestic destinations, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. With these new additions, the airline will operate more than 300 daily departures from SFO to over 100 destinations worldwide. This includes an impressive average of more than 50 daily international flights connecting travelers to over 30 cities across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Oceania.
This ambitious schedule represents a significant investment in San Francisco’s role as one of United’s largest and most important global hubs. The airline’s growing network reinforces its focus on giving travelers more nonstop options and greater flexibility, particularly for the busy summer season when international travel demand is at its peak.
United’s long-standing partnership with SFO has helped establish the airport as one of the leading gateways for international travelers visiting the United States. Over the decades, United has expanded its reach from SFO to major global cities, reflecting the Bay Area’s importance as a center for technology, innovation, and culture.
Building on recent growth, United’s 2025 initiatives have already strengthened SFO’s global footprint. The airline recently introduced nonstop routes to Panama City, Panama, and San Jose, Costa Rica—two key Central American destinations known for their tourism and business travel appeal. Continuing this momentum, United is set to launch a new seasonal service to Adelaide, Australia, on December 11, expanding its Pacific network and connecting Northern California travelers to Australia’s vibrant southern coast.

As United expands its flight schedule, SFO continues to undergo one of its most ambitious infrastructure developments in recent years. The $2.6 billion Terminal 3 West Modernization project is transforming the passenger experience through a combination of modern design, enhanced safety, and improved convenience. The project will renovate the existing 650,000-square-foot western portion of Terminal 3 with state-of-the-art seismic retrofitting, expanded security checkpoints, and upgraded passenger facilities designed to streamline the travel process.
An additional 200,000 square feet of space will be added to the terminal, providing room for new dining, retail, and relaxation areas that reflect San Francisco’s diverse culture and culinary excellence. Once completed, the modernized terminal will feature improved passenger circulation, increased energy efficiency, and expanded amenities to meet the needs of both domestic and international travelers. The upgraded section is expected to open in the fall of 2027, positioning SFO among the most advanced airports in North America.
This collaboration between SFO and United Airlines highlights a shared vision for the future of air travel—one that emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and global connectivity. As United celebrates its 100th anniversary, its historic expansion at SFO not only honors a legacy of partnership but also underscores its commitment to shaping the next century of aviation excellence.
With an expanded network, new routes across multiple continents, and an ongoing investment in passenger experience, San Francisco International Airport is poised to remain a leading global gateway. Travelers departing from SFO in 2026 can expect greater access, convenience, and comfort than ever before, making the airport a cornerstone of United’s growing global presence and a proud symbol of progress in modern aviation.
